Rob? Yes, that Rob, the one from the South Pole. You know, the one with all the jokes, good and bad. Well Rob emailed me a few weeks ago with an invitation. “Like what?” (I always leave my options open. Learned that lesson years ago when I was of babysitting age. Inevitably I would accept a baby sitting job only to learn that the very night I had to sit someone was throwing the biggest, best party in the whole wide world and I couldn’t go.)
Rob asked if I would be interested in heading up to Cathedral Ledge in North Conway, NH to do some ice climbing. Now that needed no alternate plan. I was in! Ah but there is something more Rob told me. We would be climbing with about 27 people from Paradox Sports. I was once again thinking I may have accepted too soon. Still I wanted to climb and where I live its hard to find like minded people and Rob certainly is an adventurer, like minded and promised an interesting weekend. I decided to go.
I still had no clue what this Paradox thing was so I did what everyone does, I googled them.
Paradox Sports
Paradox Sport provides inspiration, opportunities and adaptive equipment to the disabled community, empowering their pursuit of a life of excellence through human-powered outdoor sports.
Little did I realize, I was about to be blown away.
That gorgeous Saturday morning I stood at the base of an ice fall I had learned to climb almost ten years ago. But this time it would be very different.A I had the honor of climbing with some of the world’s best. I was humbled and inspired in a way so profound that my life has been forever altered.
There were no excuses that day. No excuses for the missing arm, missing legs, paralysis, traumatic brain injuries, the war in the Middle East. No excuses for hauling yourself up a steep ice pitch for the first time with nothing but your arm strength. No excuses for trying your hardest, giving your best and loving every single second of it. No excuses for the cheering, the camaraderie, the enthusiasm and the new friendships. A Living life on your terms. Pushing yourself beyond expectations. Taking risks, reinventing, rejuvenating. This was living life to the fullest.
This is what it is all about……and I just happened to be there.
I have been around the world. To every continent, to the top and bottom. But nothing I have done could compare to what I learned that day.
Look them up, Paradoxsports.org and see for yourself what is possible. What can be achieved. And what living life without excuses means.
